Edie Ralston is engaged to Lester
Calthorpe, son of a pompous federal judge. But Edie's
mother, Mimi Ralston, is as determined to break the
engagement as Edie is to keep it. So when Mimi hosts a
gathering in honor of her daughter's future in-laws, she
plans a few "special surprises" for the occasion --
including the old soup in the mother-in-law's
lap routine. Edie, who knows her mother too
well, rightly fears what might happen if her mother were
to meet her in-laws-to-be, so she hires two actors to
impersonate them. Which goes well enough . . . until
the real Calthorpes arrive, causing an outbreak of all
manner of confusion.
